Difficulty Levels Explained

“What’s within you is stronger than what’s in your way” - Erik Weihenmayer

  • Level 1

Sit back and relax because this experience requires very little perspiration. We’re hiking 2 miles or less with less than 300 ft of elevation gain. We’re moving at a slower pace, focused on discussion. Sensible (close toed) shoes are still required… accessories (rain jackets) are always encouraged.

  • Level 2

Be prepared to traverse uneven terrain, loose rocks, mud and roots for 2 to 4 miles with less than 500 ft of elevation gain. Level 2 also sometimes requires getting up and down off the ground, collecting sticks and leaves and other woodland creature behaviors (Wilderness Survival specific.)

  • Level 3

Be prepared to traverse uneven terrain, loose rocks, mud and roots for 4 to 8 miles with up to 1000 ft of elevation gain. Level 3 is not ideal for first time hikers but requires some experience and comfort with long distances and sustained up and down hill hiking often carrying a backpack of 30-40 lbs.

  • Level 4

Be prepared to traverse uneven terrain, loose rocks, mud and roots for 8 to 10 miles with more than 1000 ft of elevation gain a day while carrying a backpack weighing 30-40 lbs. Level 4 is not suitable beginner hikers. Backpacking experience is recommended and a physical fitness questionnaire is mandatory with all sign ups.
