This is a great class if you have experience hiking but have never backpacked before (carried all of your gear and slept on your hiking trip). You will leave with an excellent understanding of safety in the backcountry and have the tools to plan your first big adventure!

An excellent opportunity to try an overnight trip outdoors with the help of expert guides certified in Leave No Trace and Wilderness First Responders.

Subjects that will be taught:

  • How to plan/map a backpacking trip

  • How/where to set up camp and cook safely with Leave No Trace principals and wildlife safety

  • Proper water filtration/treatment in the backcountry

  • How to hang a bear bag

  • How to poop in the backcountry and manage feminine hygiene (you almost forgot about that part!)

Please note: There is a 3 person minimum to run this class. Please check with the geeks to make sure your trip is running (or invite your friends!)

This class will take place at Cloudland Canyon State Park. We will teach you the ABCs of packing a backpack, help you go through your gear, cover the process of planning and mapping a backpacking trip and safety precautions regarding water, weather and wildlife. Then, with your pack packed we’ll hike to camp (roughly 3 miles) where the class will continue by covering water filtration, Leave No Trace principals, safe camping proximities for cooking, hanging a bear bag and more.

Dinner D1 and Breakfast D2 are provided.
